Which version did you use of rrd4j ? A lot of modifications are not in the official release, see http://code.google.com/p/rrd4j/

Thanks for that - I didn't know about plotkit. We've been looking at amchart, protovis, google vizualizations, and jfreechart of course.

As an internal app - performance on older browsers isn't a concern, so i'll definitely take a closer look.

We also managed to wrap the horrible rrd4j api into something a bit easier on the (java programmer) eye. I'll try to get it someplace on the net.

Cheers!

In the screenshots above, we used PlotKit (http://www.liquidx.net/plotkit/) to generate the graphs. PlotKit is a JavaScript-based graphing package, and it enabled us to do some nice dynamic graphing in the browser.

Due to performance problems with older browsers however, we recently had to switch to using JFreeChart (http://www.jfree.org/jfreechart/). Plus one for usability, but minus one for dynamic graphs -- we're now rendering graphs on the server-side as PNGs.

Thats very interesting - might i ask what you used to generate the graphs? if is a wrapper around an open source bit of software - is is something you might consider posting? thanks!

We took a look at Hyperic, Zenoss, and Nagios. The really important feature for us was JMX integration so we could get some visibility into our application. Zenoss and Hyperic both have JMX support to some degree, but both of them sort of have it bolted on as an afterthought, rather than a first class data source.

Additionally, this is just our v1 of the system. We have a few tricks up our sleeves and this architecture is just the beginning. (That's all I can say for now)

Excellent post. Can you mention which open-source packages you looked at and rejected?
